Welcome Prospective Graduate Fellows,

 

Overview: In order to promote and foster continuing generations of scholars in African American and African Diaspora life and culture, the Benjamin Quarles the Quarles Humanities and Social Science Institute awards three one-year fellowships to doctoral students to complete their dissertations. Morgan State University graduate students in doctoral programs in the humanities and social sciences (e.g., Art, English, History, Philosophy, Anthropology, and humanities and theoretical approaches in other related social science) whose research focuses on the interdisciplinary and integrated study of African-American and African Diaspora life and culture.

 

Eligibility: Eligible graduate students must have dissertation proposals accepted.  Priority will be given to doctoral students within a year of completing the dissertation, and with needs to complete specific aspects of their work.  Graduate recipients may be funded for research projects involving or leading to the publication of scholarly books and/or articles in professionally refereed journals; the mounting of exhibits, productions, or performances; travel to research centers or libraries; funds for travel expenses to consult with other professionals concerning the project; or stipends to fund research time during the summer.

 

Funded Fellowship Activities and Requirements: Applicants for Quarles Graduate Fellowships may propose a variety of activities and projects associated with their doctoral research: travel to research centers or libraries, travel to conduct interviews or to consult with professionals and experts, attendance at professional conferences related to the area of research, purchase of research equipment or data, or stipends to fund research during the summer. All projects must lead clearly to the timely completion of the dissertation.

Quarles Graduate Fellows are required to complete the activities and to achieve the goals and objectives of their project. In addition, on the completion of their project, they are required to keep the campus abreast of the progress of their project through a periodic report presented in the Quarles Institute Newsletter and website.

 

Selection Criteria: Applications for the Quarles Graduate Fellowship will be evaluated on the basis of

• overall quality and scope of the proposed project;

• anticipated impact of the proposed funding on the dissertation research and the completion of the dissertation;

• likelihood of achieving the stated aims and objectives;

• approval by the faculty adviser or dissertation committee chair;

• justification for the proposed budget; and

• overall benefit of the proposed project to achieving the goals of the Mellon Grant.

 

Selection criteria for Graduate Scholars

Funding is for one (1) year only, and begins June 1st and ends May 31st. Funding will range from $3,000 to $5,000, and cannot be used toward tuition.
